A little girl got lost on her first day of school.  Police officers in her small town found her and had lunch with her before she was able to be returned to school. Then a few weeks later the officers returned to her home to find her and a sibling stabbed to death with dozens of stab wounds.

The officers are receiving mandatory counseling because of the incident.  Officers like to pretend that they are immune to the problems of stress related to the job.  I read a study a few years ago that said just putting on the uniform and body armor will increase blood pressure in most officers.  That is a measurable instance of the job causing stress.

Officers who retire from the job often commit suicide.  There are many reasons for this but I suspect that one of them is the officer no longer has to do the job but has time to think about all the bad things they witnessed over the years.  Every officer sees murder victims, car crash victims and other unpleasant sights.  They have to do things the average person would never have to do in our society.  It can be very damaging to the psychological health of the officer.  I support mandatory counseling after traumatic events, that way the officer does not have to be embarrassed that he has asked for counseling, because he is required to go; that's what the SGT Says.
