The pope's whistle-blower

The pope's butler is the whistle-blower who is being prosecuted for providing the documents to an Italian investigative journalist. The Vatican is spinning it the best they can, e.g., by allowing a pool of journalists to attend the trial they claim transparency.

"The documents at the heart of the case have lifted the lid on corruption at the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church, which is still battered by revelations of clerical cover-ups of child sexual abuse." [via Trial of Pope's butler: Journalists admitted, but secret evidence not].

They, in part, tell "of corruption in the awarding of public works contracts, obstructing the reform of the Vatican bank, and a mud-slinging campaign involving false accusations of homosexual affairs."

Alessandro Speciale, Vatican correspondent for Religion News Service: “It is certainly embarrassing for the Vatican but I’m not sure it will resonate that much among ordinary Catholics around the world.

And that is the problem - ordinary Catholics seem not to care about any of the church's problems. Change doesn't arise out of apathy.
