It is the American way to back right wing dictatorships

SuccessiveAmerican administrations essentially purchased with American taxpayermoney the dislike, if not the hatred, of the peoples of the region,”he said, by backing dictatorial governments over popular oppositionand supporting Israel over the Palestinians."[EgyptianLeader Mohamed Morsi Spells Out Terms for U.S.-Arab Ties].
Ifthe US can put its fear of an Egyptian democracy headed by Mr. Morsi,a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, aside - it has with thenew Egyptian president an opportunity not only to advance Americaninterests in the region, but also to force (and that is what it willtake) Israel to accept the Palestinians as a neighboring state.
Oursupport of the former Egyptian dictator Mubarak, and his predecessor, had not brought about peace in the Middle East. It is time to changegears and support the fledgling Egyptian democracy.
Butit would take a major change in the way the US conducts foreignpolicy. Now that change seems to have been started by Hillary Clintonas secretary of state in the Obama administration. That needs to continue. But, a Romneyadministration would reverse direction with American interests beingdetermined solely by business interests and that of Israel.
Cananyone doubt that Romney would have supported Mubarak in theEgyptian Arab Spring?

Weare not going to war over Israel's whining nor are we going to warwith countries like Egypt in any event. It is unlikely too that wewould take our money and go home. There are other countries justwaiting to fill any vacuum we may leave.
Butour aid ought to be focused on assisting civilian governments todevelop economically and to prevent war among nations in that regionmerely because of religious differences. This would also entail someremoval of CIA operatives hiding in plain sight within thenon-governmental agencies operating under the pretext ofpro-democracy support.
Governmentsof dictatorships, civilian or military, should be shunned withassistance only to incentivize democracy. The feeding of NorthKoreans as an example. But the U.S.plans for $1.4-billion arms package for Indonesiais an example of wrongful allocation of taxpayers revenue to achieveunknown objectives. Clearly this expenditure can't enhance democracynor economically develop that nation.
Thedays of arming countries whose governments we believe will act as ourpawns has to be in the past. This only artificially supports andmaintains the economy of the US military industrial complex. Yes –a lot of civilian good comes from military contracts but at aterrible and unacceptable cost - prosecution of war around the globe.
Ourdays of strutting our military alleged prowess is not compatible withthe changed world. There is no valid reason for the US military tobe in Iraq, Afghanistan or in any country by proxy.
Wedidn't win the Korean War and we didn't win the Vietnam War. There isno reason to suspect or claim that we have won some war in Iraq orAfghanistan. Iraq had no WMDs nor in effect an army. Afghanistan hadvirtually no government to be accused of harboring terrorists.Afghanistan is a dirt-poor country wthout (still) any viable centralgovernment. It is configuration of tribes within poorly definedborders.
Funnythough how we invaded a country like Iraq yet shy away from war withNorth Korea and Iran. And neither Iraq nor Afghanistan had a direct hand – even anindirect connection is unlikely – in the 9-11 disaster. In fact thecountry that had a more direct connection is Saudi Arabia oursteadfast friendly, Muslim dictatorship.
Ourso called fight against terrorism is nothing more than a facade. In addition to maintaining a climate of fear in the US, ouractivities abroad only undercut any democratic efforts by the populace inthose countries that we suspect of harboring terrorists. Using dronesto exact our justice – often going astray – only inflames thepopulace against the US.
Butalas – it is only a (opium) pipe dream. There is no yellow brick road. And holding hands and dancing around the camp fire with not bring about change.
