New Haven Man Sentenced to 18 Months in Federal Prison for Phoning in Bomb Threats
David B, Fein, United States Attorneyfor the District of Connecticut, announced that Travail McLean, 19, of NewHaven, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Alfred V.Covello in Hartford to 18 months of imprisonment, followed by three years ofsupervised release, for making false bomb threats over the telephone.
According to court documents andstatements made in court, on nine separate dates between September 2010 andJune 2011, McLean made a total of 15 false bomb threat telephone calls to theNew Haven 911 call center. All of the threatened locations, which included ahome for the elderly and a police station, were in densely populated areas inthe vicinity of Whalley Avenue in New Haven. Every call stated either thatthere were one or more bombs at a particular location or that the location wasgoing to be blown up.
Each time McLean made a false threatcall, law enforcement emergency response teams promptly responded, cleared thearea of people, and conducted a thorough search for bombs, explosives, andother dangerous materials.
This matter was investigated by theFederal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force and the New HavenPolice Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States AttorneyHenry K. Kopel.
