Two officers were serving a search warrant and they were attacked by a large dog.  As one officer was being attacked the second officer drew his firearm and shot at the dog.  Instead he hit his partner and seriously injured him.  Dogs are relatively small, and fast and are very difficult to hit with a handgun, even at close range.  We seldom train to fire downward at a small fast moving target.

Officers serving a search warrant should try to gain intelligence about the location.  One important thing to find out about is the presence of a dog.  Ask your dog license agency if their is a dog at the location.  Park an undercover vehicle across the street and watch the location for a period of time or drive by and take photos to detect dogs.  Have a helicopter fly overhead during the day and take photos to look for dog evidence.

Doggie doo in the yard, dog bowls, dog toys, kennel, dog house, or dirt patches from the dog running around can provide evidence of a dog.  Ask the mailman, ask the neighbors, kids in particular will know if a dog lives in the house.  Deliver a mock package to the site to see if a dog comes to the door.  Have animal control accompany your warrant team if there is a dog or have them train you on how to avoid the dog; that's what the SGT Says.
