Gaithersburg Armed Career Criminal Exiled to 15 Years in Prison for Illegal Possession of a Gun

Greenbelt,Maryland — Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced EverettFloyd Jenkins, age 51, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, today to 15 years in prisonfollowed by five years of supervised release for being a felon in possession ofa gun. Chief Judge Chasanow enhanced Jenkins’ sentence upon finding that he isan armed career criminal based on previous convictions for second degreemurder, attempted distribution of heroin and distribution of heroin.
Thesentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of MarylandRod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Steven L. Gerido of the Bureau ofAlcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Baltimore Field Division; and ChiefJ. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department.
Accordingto statements made at the plea and sentencing hearings, on December 24, 2011,Jenkins was pulled over by Montgomery County Police on Lost Knife Road. As oneofficer spoke with Jenkins at the driver’s window, a second officer approachedthe car on the passenger side and saw the handle of a handgun sticking out ofJenkins’ pants pocket. Jenkins was removed from the car and loaded 9mmsemi–automatic pistol was recovered from his pants pocket. The gun was found tohave been stolen in Alabama in 2002–2003. According to court documents, Jenkinswas driving under the influence of alcohol and his arrest was precipitated by aconcerned citizen who witnessed Jenkins driving erratically on I–270 andstriking a barrier.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosensteincommended the ATF and Montgomery County Police Department for their work inthis investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant United States AttorneyEmily Glatfelter, who prosecuted the case.
